Summer in the City

Taking a break from posting a bit this summer. Enjoying the weather and spending time with my lovely 91 year old mother and family visiting from out of town.
Make the most of today. It won't come around again. Ever.

Mixed Media on Canvas

 A great activity for kids:
Cheapo coffee filters dipped and sprayed with inks, dyes, or watered down paints.
Fold them any which way and just go for it!

Juicy Luscious Colour!

Juicy 60s colour is my fave!

I love the way this fabric turned out! Very messy dying fabric and I always forget to  wear gloves!
It reminds me of Buddhist monks saffron coloured robes. We used to have a group of Buddhist monks living near us and I always felt more at peace watching them walk through our neighbourhood. Miss those guys... called them my "Monk Buddies"

I'll be using the fabric in a large mixed media piece I am working on. Should be pretty cool.

These nasturtiums were the inspiration for the fabric. Aren't they beautiful? Good enough to eat. In fact way back  before anyone had heard of such a thing, my always creative mother used to throw them into our salads. She was the original Martha Stewart- just without the prison time :)

Life is What Happens While You're Busy Making Other Plans...

Lately have been thinking a lot about this quote, one of my favourites by John Lennon.
I  created a  community facebook group ReNewton after becoming frustrated with a neglected street corner in my neighbourhood. Didn't really think it would get much attention. WRONG!

Social media has changed the way people get involved! Many media interviews, stories and mentions on Twitter
Good stuff for sure, but has taken me away from my 'day job'. Need some balance here folks! Really have to get back to my little studio and my passion.
I have been so encouraged by the community support my neighbours have shown to support and revitalize our community. To quote Margaret Mead...
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has !!l
Enjoy your day. Create something wonderful!

Orange One 2007

ORANGE ONE
2007

I'm still calling this one " ORANGE ONE" So far it's the title that's sticking. I 've been experimenting lately with lots of colour in my paintings but have found that my most successful pieces tend to be those where I have used a limited palette.
I 'm taking a workshop on Friday with a Graffiti -inspired artist so I'll be out today getting my supplies. I've been interested in graffiti since 1978 when I first saw New York City subway
trains covered in the most creative and colourful graffiti art. I thought it was really beautiful. There was an artist back then who did a lot of it and became quite famous, but right now I can't remember his name!
Have a great day in the sunshine!
